How it all started.

Mission

We believe the next generation of materials is grown.

Mycelium Material was founded from a belief that materials can be grown, instead of produced.

In our resource constrained world, we need circular, natural materials more than ever. Mycelium is not only a renewable material and a viable alternative for harmful materials, but the products made from it have many beneficial effects on our natural environment.

Self-assembling, mycelium materials grow instead of being manufactured. A natural process that exists for millions of years, and is now harnessed through modern technology. At Mycelium Material research and development are at the core of all the activities: materials are rigorously tested and their capabilities are extensively analyzed.

Projects happen in symbiosis

The focus is on the strengths of our partners and experts to produce beautiful materials and work towards a circular business model. This means minimizing our footprint with less transport, energy efficiency and reutilizing base materials from other fields.

The same way fungi and trees exchange nutrients, we believe that symbiosis between companies creates the best possible work.

Upcycling waste streams

Mycelium Material was born from a collaboration between Erik Swaagstra and Rob Banken. Both saw the potential of mycelium as a revolutionary new material with great environmentally friendly properties.

With access to the facilities of Banken’s highly successful mushroom growing company, they made it into the perfect site for experimenting with the substrates that until not long ago were considered waste.
